 Museum of Yuan Dynasty

In the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), the drinking habit was changed a lot, for the Mongol liked drinking strong spirit, which was in fashion throughout the country. The development of distilled spirit was promoted.

In 1291, the governor of Bozhou (north of Guizhou nowadays), Yang Hanying, presented the emperor with the distilled spirit made in Renhuai. The emperor praised him with lands and made him one of the highest governor. From then on, tributed Moutai liquor's flavour was in the air of imperial garden.

Taxation was different in different areas in Yuan Dynasty. Inorder to avoid the heavy taxation on liquor in Huguang District, Yang Hanying asked the crone to transfer Bozhou's subordination to Sichuan District, where the taxation was lighter. The liquor-making industry of Guizhou was further advanced.

Influenced by the Central Plains, the court and nobles of Yuan began to preserve various articles for health protection and nourishment to make up tonic liquor.

Italian Marco Polo came to the capital of Yuan in 1275 to be an official. In his work “Travels of Marco Polo”, the means of making rice liquor was recorded.

The liquor literature of Yuan Dynasty was reflected in Yuanqu (a musical form of Yuan Dynasty), espe-cially in the fine works by Guan Hanqing, Wang Shi-pu and Ma Zhiyuan.
